Grapefruit and lemon peels are edible, and when you trash the peel, you’re also throwing away beneficial nutrients. The peel has significantly more fiber than the pulp. It also contains essential oils, phytochemicals and vitamin C, all of which provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection. The essential oil, Limonene, also shows promise for fighting some forms of cancer. For example, the June 2013 issue of “Cancer Prevention Research” published the results of a study showing that limonene may kill cancer cells in women with early-stage breast cancer. The anti-oxidant Hesperidin, or hesperetin, in the peel shows potential to slow the growth of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract and pulmonary system, according to a report in the March 2011 issue of the “American Journal of Surgery. Not only do these phytochemicals possibly kill growth but may PREVENT growth by nourishing the healthy cells. Take that cancer! #BAM!
How do you use these sour suckers? Freeze them and then grate into a Tupperware. Store in the freezer until you want to use. Sprinkle in dressings, mix with mayo for a zingy sandwich, over food, or in smoothies etc. My fav is in taquila..but that's just me. ;)
You only need a daily sprinkle so, go easy to start.
--> Just a side note but a biggie: grapefruit has some interactions with heart & cholesterol medications. Check with your doctor before starting something new if you're on life meds. OK?
